Allegations of violence in by-elections in two municipal bodies of West Bengal

Kolkata: By-elections were held on Sunday in two wards of Bangaon Municipality and Asansol Municipal Corporation amid allegations of violence. The BJP alleged that Bongaon South MLA Swapan Majumdar and Bongaon North MLA Ashok Kirtaniya were thrashed by Trinamool Congress supporters for protesting alleged rigging in Ward 14 of the civic body in North 24 Parganas.

BJP workers blocked the road for nearly an hour in protest, while the ruling Trinamool Congress denied the allegations. Election Due to the death of TMC councilor Dilip Das, he had to be admitted to the ward.

While TMC has fielded Papai Raha, BJP has fielded Arup Pal. CPI(M) and Congress were also in the fray. Sporadic incidents of violence were also reported from Ward 6 of Asansol in West Bardhaman district. The elections were held there after the resignation of TMC councilor Sanjay Chakraborty.

TMC fielded Bidhan Upadhyay, while BJP fielded Srideep Chakraborty from the seat. The BJP alleged that its Durgapur West MLA Laxman Ghorui was stopped from entering a booth in JK Nagar More. It also alleged that his polling agent was beaten up in booth 82.

However, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh has denied BJP’s allegations. “BJP is afraid of losing and hence is making up stories. BJP can only make noise but it has no organizational or support base. People are with TMC.

State Election Commission secretary Nilanjan Shandilya told PTI that polling was held peacefully in both the wards and there was no major incident.

Asked about BJP’s allegations, he said the SEC has sought a report for necessary action.

Till 5 pm, 82.71 per cent polling was recorded in Ward 14 of Bongaon, while 82.62 per cent was recorded in Ward 6 of Asansol. There were 4,776 voters in Ward 14 of Bangaon and 10,006 in Ward 6 of Asansol.
