Voting for the Asansol Nagar by-election began in the early hours of the day amid heavy security in the polling booth premises.

A clash broke out between supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday amid the ongoing municipal by-polls in West Bengal’s Asansol constituency.

“We had come to see whether the polling was going on peacefully or not, but TMC supporters attacked us. TMC is rigging votes,” news agency ANI dismissed BJP MLA Laxman Ghorui as saying.

Voting began in the morning amidst heavy security in the polling station premises.

Actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha registered a landslide victory by securing 6,56,358 votes in the Asansol parliamentary constituency bypoll earlier this year.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) won both the by-elections to the Asansol parliamentary and Ballygunge assembly seats held in April year.

TMC candidate Babul Supriyo won the bypoll in Ballygunge with 51,199 votes.
