Center asked to file reply on petitions challenging Agneepath scheme

New Delhi: Delhi High Court refused to stay on Thursday Agnipath scheme for recruitment in the armed forces and asked the Center to file a reply on a batch of petitions challenging it. Chief Justice’s Bench Satish Chandra Sharma And Justice Subramaniam Prasad asked the Center to file a consolidated reply on the petitions challenging the scheme.
The Agneepath scheme, announced on June 14, has a provision to recruit youth in the defense forces in the age group of 17-and-a-half to 21 years only for four years, of which 25 per cent is to be retained for 15 more years.
Protests broke out in several states soon after the scheme was announced last month.
Later, the government increased the upper age limit to 23 years for recruitment under the scheme in 2022.
