Globally, he said, more than 12% of the world’s population is linked to cooperatives through over three million cooperatives and the combined cooperative economy is the fifth largest economic entity in the world.
He said, “Out of 3 million cooperative societies in the world, 8.5 lakh are in India and about 130 million people are directly connected with them. 91 percent villages in India are such that some kind of cooperatives are functioning.”
He also attacked while addressing a gathering at Vigyan Bhavan. Shah also explained what his ministry has been doing since its formation last year to strengthen the sector, and said that the government has decided to set up a National Cooperative University to provide training and skilled manpower to cooperatives.
