The Indian Air Force has honored Flight Lieutenant D. Ravindra Rao with the gallantry medal on August 15. On 6 November 2021, a Jaguar fighter plane crashed while landing inside the Air Force Station in Agra (UP). The pilot was badly trapped. The medal has been given to Rao giving credit for saving his life.

Now Ghanshyam Singh, a resident of Rajasthan and retired as a sergeant in the Indian Air Force, has raised questions on this decision of the government. He has claimed that he never did the courageous act for which Rao was awarded the medal. They had run away from the fear of a blast in the plane that day. Ghanshyam’s father Laluram Jat is also a retired Warrant Officer of the Air Force.

Dainik Bhaskar spoke to Ghanshyam Singh in detail on this issue. What has been revealed in this is shocking. Ghanshyam, a resident of Kumplia (present-day Jodhpur) in Barmer district, claims that he has done the bravery for which Rao has been given the post.

He had saved the life of the pilot by risking his life on the day of the incident. When Dainik Bhaskar spoke to Wing Commander Jagat Bihari Das, the ATC officer of the then Agra Air Force Station, on this matter, he refused to give any information.

He said whatever you want to ask, file RTI. What, when and how happened on the day of the incident, read the words of Ghanshyam Singh …

how can i forget that day
How can I forget that day of the accident? It is 6th November 2021 at 12.30 pm. I was posted as Air Safety Officer at Agra Air Force Station. There were 3 Jaguar fighter planes landing. Two fighter planes had made a safe landing and the third plane was landing behind them. Then it crashed with a bang.

On hearing the blast, I immediately informed the MTDO and reached the spot along with two CFT (Crash Fire Tender) teams. The plane had turned upside down after going down the runway and the rear part caught fire. Here CFT members without wasting any time started extinguishing the fire with gas and foam.

Suddenly I saw the pilot in the plane. Going near the cockpit, he saw the pilot hanging upside down. Immediately I gave courage to the pilot. I said – don’t be afraid. I will save you. I noticed that the ejection seat of the pilot was active. There was a danger of explosion there. Despite this, I crawled backwards and entered the cockpit halfway. Then Flight Lieutenant D. Ravindra Rao also reached there, who was trying to help me.

Meanwhile, the water and foam sprayed on the engine to douse the fire got heated and started falling on the pilot trapped inside the cockpit. The pilot shouted loudly.

All the CFT members and Flight Lieutenant D. Ravindra Rao panicked and went far behind because of the fear of explosion due to his screaming, but I stood there. With a lot of effort, he reached the feet of the stranded pilot. Removed the open part of his leg-restorer and G-suit and brought it out safely. After this he was immediately taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Ghanshyam Singh has complained by tweeting. Singh claims that for the courageous act for which Flight Lieutenant D. Ravindra Rao of the Indian Air Force was awarded the medal, he did not do it. That day, he ran away for fear of an explosion in the plane.

Said – Cheating with bravery is not tolerated
I have retired from Indian Air Force on 30 June 2022 after completing 20 years of service. On August 17th, 2022, a friend of mine wrote on WhatsApp the list of gallantry awards honored on this year’s Independence Day. I was surprised to read the name of Flight Lieutenant D. Ravindra Rao in the list. The award was given to Rao for the feat which was mine. It was a big shock to see this. I am not sorry for not getting the award, but with my bravery, I am unable to bear such deception.

Complaint sent from the Ministry of Defense to the higher officials of the Air Force. The retired sergeant has made it clear that the statement of the Court of Inquiry should be checked. It would be clear who did what.

This is my statement in the Court of Inquiry
I made the same statement in the Indian Air Force’s Court of Inquiry after the accident. Then all the officers also praised me. The unit officers from outside also congratulated me on the personal number. Flight Lieutenant Rao had reached there after eighty per cent of the work was completed. I demand from the Air Force and the Ministry of Defense to extract the statements of the Court of Inquiry for that day and to check the citation statements of me and Flight Lieutenant Rao. Milk of milk will become water of water.
