CWG gold medalists Mirabai, Jeremy, Achinta out of Asian Championships

2022 Commonwealth Games gold medalists Mirabai Chanu, Jeremy Lalrinnunga and Achinta Shuli will miss out on this year’s Asian Championships, opting to focus on the World Meets instead. The World Meet is a qualifying event for the Paris Olympics.

Along with him the other five lifters will be out of the championship. They will fly to the USA on Tuesday for a three-and-a-half week Strength and Conditioning (S&C) training camp in St. Louis.

Chanu, Jeremy and Sheuli will be accompanied by CWG medalists Sanket Sargar, Bindyarani Devi, Gurdeep Singh and former 2018 CWG champion RV Rahul and Asian Championships gold medalist Membrane Dalbehera for three-and-a-half weeks in St. Louis, USA. Camp

India’s head coach Vijay Sharma told PTI, “We will be in USA for 23-24 days. It is off-season so we will have a strength program there.”

Sargar, who was injured due to an elbow injury during his Commonwealth Games event, will be rehabilitated.

He said, “All these lifters have minor flaws like Gurdeep has a problem with his wrist. Sanket will go through proper rehab.

We want everyone to be fully fit for the World Championships.”

The lifter will work with Dr. Aaron Horshig, a former weightlifter-physician and strength and conditioning coach.

Chanu has been consulting with Horshig since 2020.
She was instrumental in resolving her imbalance issue that affected her snatch technique.

He had a month-long training with Horschig in March before the Commonwealth Games.

“Meera has no problem at the moment, but since we are going there, she will do some strength training as well,” Sharma said.

The Asian Championships is to be held in Manama, Bahrain from 6 to 16 October.

India will field its ‘B’ team, which will consist of junior lifters.

“The lifters who have returned from CWG will not compete in the Asian Championships. We will send our B team,” Sharma said.

“The focus is on the World Championships, which is a qualifying event for the Paris Olympics,” the head coach said.

The World Championships, to be held in Bogota, Colombia from 5 to 15 December, is the first qualifying event for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
