Disappointing: Akram, Gambhir and Shastri question Pant’s place in Team India

former cricketer Wasim Akram, Gautam Gambhir and Ravi Shastri Indian left-hander Rishabh Pant’s shot selection in the Asia Cup 2022 Super Four match against Pakistan was questioned, resulting in his early dismissal at a crucial time in the first innings at the Dubai International Stadium. Coming to bat first, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul exploded in the opening stand of 54 runs. Returning to his aggressive attacking approach, Virat Kohli scored 60 off 44 balls, hitting four fours and a six. But the rest of the batsmen, including Pant, fell early trying to go big as India posted 181/7 in 20 overs.

Pant, who did not play in the Group A match against Pakistan as Dinesh Karthik, was included in the eleven for Sunday’s match on the veteran keeper-batsman. Pant hit two fours in his 12-ball 14 before reverse sweeping Shadab Khan straight to backward point.

As soon as Pant returned to the dressing room in the video that went online on social media, Rohit was seen asking him the reason for his shot which led to him being dismissed. Pant was also seen explaining the reason behind playing that shot to the Indian captain.

After the match ended, Gambhir expressed his disappointment at Star Sports over the way Pant was dismissed. “Rishabh Pant will be disappointed because it’s not his shot, his shot is probably hit long-on or deep mid-wicket, you end up there and get out, of course you can take it because it Your strength is there. Your strength is not reverse-sweeping.”

Akram also agreed with Gambhir’s views. “Specifically, Gauti (Gambhir), at that stage of the game, there was no need to play that shot. I know he plays that shot in Test cricket, I know he is one of the top players in world cricket. But for the game at this stage, that shot was not required.”

Shastri, who had drilled into the importance of proper shot selection in Pant as India’s head coach, explained how Pant did not learn from the shots played by Rohit, Rahul and Kohli.

“Especially after what he saw what Rohit, Rahul and others were doing. Where were the runs coming? It was under the ground and in the V. It was a beautiful pitch, salute to the groundsman, the ball was sliding on the bat.” That’s his strength, he can smack it. No boundaries are big for Rishabh Pant if he adds it, but it’s his territory. Absolutely, right (on criticism over shot selection).”
