New Delhi: According to an official statement issued on Thursday, the central government has advised edible oil manufacturers, packers and importers to declare the net quantity on the package without temperature, apart from declaring it in weight.
They should be corrected by the Department of Consumer Affairs to rectify their labeling of declaring the net quantity in units of quantity without mentioning the temperature along with the weight of the product within six months from the date of issue i.e. 15th January, 2023. has been advised. Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said in a statement.
Under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, it is mandatory for all pre-packaged commodities to declare the net quantity in terms of standard units of weight or measure, apart from other declarations, in the interest of consumers.
Net quantity of edible oil, vegetable ghee, etc. to be declared either by weight or quantity in accordance with the provisions made under the rules and if declared in quantity, must be declared to be of essentially equal weight to the commodity . It has been observed that the industries are consistently mentioning the temperature while declaring the net quantity, the ministry said.
The manufacturer/packer/importer is declaring the net quantity of edible oil etc. in quantity by mentioning the units of quantity as well as the temperature at the time of packing. Some manufacturers were raising the temperature to 600C. It has been observed that such declaration of net quantity of edible oil, vegetable ghee etc. in terms of volume (for example 1 liter) with mass at different temperature, which is different when packaging refers to high temperatures. The weight of soybean edible oil may vary at different temperatures.
Therefore, edible oil has different weight at different temperatures. Therefore, in order to ensure that the consumer gets the correct quantity in the package at the time of purchase, the manufacturers/packers/importers of edible oils etc. are advised to pack the said products without mentioning the temperature and ensure that For that quantity has been declared. The package should be correct in quantity and mass, the ministry said.
