Thakur, the third term MLC, who filed his nomination papers on Wednesday, was elected unopposed

JD(U) leader Devesh Chandra Thakur was on Thursday elected as the Speaker of the Legislative Council in Bihar. Thakur, the third term MLC, who filed his nomination papers on Wednesday, was elected unopposed.

The post was vacant since May 2017 when the term of the last Speaker of the Upper House, Awadhesh Narayan Singh, ended. Haroon Rashid, the then deputy chairman of the JD(U), also presided over the House till the end of his term in 2020, when BJP MLC Singh was made the acting president.

The special session called after the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ came to power in the state was also marked by BJP MLC and former minister Samrat Choudhary becoming the Leader of the Opposition in the Upper House.
