MUMBAI: A mass movement was held near the controversial Metro-3 car shed on Sunday morning for ‘Aarey Bachao’. Citizens, environmentalists and some political parties gathered at Picnic Point site to agitate against the car shed project and raised slogans against Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis and CM Eknath Shinde.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) members, led by party’s national executive member Preeti Sharma Menon, started their protest by offering prayers to Hanuman Chalisa.
“We are praying to Lord Hanuman because the Vanar Sena (Hanuman’s monkey army) also loves and protects his forests. Through our prayers, we want Fadnavis to realize that there are trees for Aarey. How important are they; and so he (Fadnavis) should take the car shed outside Aarey as suggested by experts,” Menon said.
Slogans like ‘Save Aarey, Save Mumbai’ and ‘Metro Ek Hona Hai, Inko Poora Aare Khana Hai’ were raised amid tight police arrangements. ,
Youth as well as senior citizens were seen holding various posters and display cards with the theme ‘Save Are’.
D Stalin, environmentalist of Vanshakti Group, said: “These protests to save Aarey have become organic, as Mumbaikars are actually saddened and angry at the plan to cut over 2500 trees for the car shed. Apart from the protests, We will fight this too. To get a metro car shed outside Aarey in the courts.”
Demonstrator Tabrez Saeed commented: “By afternoon there were at least 700 people at the protest site. Some even got drums to sing tribal songs that highlight the need to protect our forests. These protests will only get bigger if The new Maharashtra government should listen to the demands of the people.”
Some of the protesters also invoked the spirit of tribal freedom fighter hero, Birsa Munda (whose statue is installed at the picnic point site of Aarey), to help him fight for the conservation of the forest.
“As per the map of Aarey, the car shed plot is barely 230 meters away from the reserved forest section of this green zone. Hence, we want the government to ensure that this entire area is declared a reserve forest and there is no No more development. Aarey Sev activist Amrita Bhattacharjee said, “There are often reports of leopard sightings from here.”
Activists Joru Bathena and Nandkumar Pawar also joined the crowd. “I am happy to see so many youth taking to the streets to protest against this important cause of Aarey,” Pawar said.
Later in the afternoon, Shiv Sena’s Aaditya Thackeray also tweeted in support of the ‘Aarey Bachao’ movement. “Since I have to attend the state assembly meeting today, I will miss the protests for Aarey Forest and MMRCL land. I humbly urge the new government to reconsider its decision. Don’t put hatred on us, our dear. on Mumbai. Aarey is not just 2700+ trees, it is about its biodiversity which we want to preserve in our Mumbai. There are daily sightings of leopards and other small species in and around the car shed spot,” said Thackeray .
He further added: “We are proud to have declared over 800 acres of forest around it. While the car shed work was stopped by the then CM Uddhav Thackeray ji, the work on Line 3 was fully supported The alternate location of Kanjurmarg, disputed by the Government of India, will fit at one location in the depot of Metro Lines 3, 4, 6, 14, thus saving cost and time.
A day earlier on Saturday, Amit Thackeray, son of MNS chief Raj Thackeray, had also announced his intention to support the ‘Aare Bachao’ movement against the car shed.
