SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) has raised questions on the release of the convicts of Bilkis Bano. Committee head Harjinder Singh Dhami said that pregnant Bilkis Bano was raped and seven members of the family were murdered. If the government can release such culprits then why not the captive Sikhs.
Dhami said that a Gujarat MLA gave a statement that the 11 convicts, who were serving the sentence in the Bilkis Bano rape case, did not commit the incident intentionally, the situation was like this. All these convicts have good character, but what the captive Sikhs also did for the community. The action on the Golden Temple and the massacre of Sikhs in Delhi-Kanpur and elsewhere was a reaction to the captive Sikhs. Even the punishments of the captive Sikhs have been completed.
In 2019, orders were given for the release of 9 captive Sikhs.
Pradhan Dhami said that in 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself had ordered the release of 9 captive Sikhs. The death sentence of two captive Sikhs was also commuted, but the captive Sikhs were not released after that. If the government can waive the punishment of rapists and murderers, then captive Sikhs should be released.
SGPC not being given time
Pradhan Dhami said that time was sought on his behalf to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for the release of the captive Sikhs, but time has not been given yet. It is surprising that the Sikhs made sacrifices before and after independence, but no one is ready to listen to their release.
