Speaking to reporters at the scene, Houston Police Assistant Chief Chandra Hatcher said officers received several calls before 1 a.m. about a shooting in the 13300 block of Northborough Drive.
Hatcher said they rushed to the scene but did not find any witnesses, suspects or complainants.
Further investigation found that a mother was driving in the area with her two children and when her vehicle stopped at a stop sign at an intersection got hit by bullets,
“Once she realized that her children had been shot, the woman immediately left the location and immediately took them to the hospital,” Hatcher said.
About 15 minutes after responding to the scene, police received additional calls about two children arriving at a regional hospital with gunshot wounds.
Hatcher said there was a 5 year old shot and died of injuriesWhile an 8-year-old shot is also expected to make a full recovery.
“It is not clear whether the complainants were the target of the shootings or if something else was going on in the area at the time,” Hatcher said. “We don’t know a motive. We don’t have suspicious details other than possibly two black men in a black vehicle. We’re here looking for surveillance footage and gathering evidence.”
On the basis of information received from some witnesses, Hatcher said the police believe The dark colored vehicle, possibly accompanied by two people, was heading west on Rush Street, while the complainant’s vehicle was heading north on Northborough. People in the westbound vehicle began to drop a shotgun or potentially several firearms.
Hatcher said the complainant’s vehicle was stopped at a stop sign at an intersection when it was hit by gunfire.
