Alizee Cornet, 32, did not give up despite Inga Swietec’s 37-match winning streak in the women’s singles third round match at Wimbledon 2022. On Saturday July 2, Cornet defeated World No. 1 Swietec 6-4, 6-2 on Court 1.

Sweetek, who was considered one of the strongest contenders to win the title, lost in straight sets without a fight. Cornet said that he backed himself to overtake the Polish star, despite the heavy odds he faced against him.

“Why not me? I kept saying to myself, OK, streak. I was telling myself that someone has to break the streak eventually, and why shouldn’t I? I thought this was the best opportunity for me to do it.” Maybe it was his less good surface,” Cornett was quoted as saying after the match.

Earlier, Sweetek had mentioned that he tried to make himself comfortable while playing on the grass, but to no avail. After his defeat, he said that he did not rule out the possibility of being pulled out of the tournament.

Meanwhile, France-born Cornet, de Nice, says she goes to her best when she’s among the dark-horses of a tournament.

“I feel like I’m a little more relaxed when I’m underdog. I feel like I have nothing to lose, and that’s where I’m most dangerous. I play, like, more relaxed, I hit better than the baseline. I don’t know, there’s no parasite in my thoughts,” Cornet said.

Cornet is set to next face Croatia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in a round of 16 match on Monday, July 4.
