Former world No 1 Simona Halep says she is in a much better place physically and mentally. The 30-year-old has advanced to the round of 16 of the women’s singles draw at Wimbledon 2022, after suffering a panic attack during her French Open 2022 match against China’s Xinwen Zheng.
On Saturday, the veteran defeated Magdalena Frech of Poland 6-4, 6-1 on Court 2 and put her incredible skills to the fore with the racket. Halep said she has stopped clogging her mind with thoughts of injury concerns.
Needless to say, the Romanian star, who has won two Grand Slam singles titles in her career, is enjoying her heart out at the grass-court tournament in SW19.
“I love tradition. I love what’s happening here at Wimbledon, it’s so special, all white and with all this stuff,” Halep was quoted as saying after the match.
“I’m not playing, so…yeah, I’ll have fun!”
“I’ve been battling with confidence lately. But it’s normal after last year when I got injured and didn’t win much.”
“But, again, with the work I’ve done, I feel better. I feel like physically I’m stronger, I’m stronger, I’m where I need to be. I don’t worry about injuries anymore.” Tennis will come. If I keep doing what I have to do every day, I really believe it’s going to come through at the highest level,” Halep said.
Halep may need to improve her game a bit as she prepares to take on fourth seed Paula Badosa in a round of 16 match on Monday, July 4.
