Simona Halep reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time since the Australian Open in 2021 as the two-time Grand Slam champion came to Wimbledon 2022 with an impeccable performance in the fourth round of women’s singles on Monday, 5 July.

Grass Court Grand Slam 2019 champion Simona Halep defeated World No. 4 Paula Badosa 6-1, 6-2 in a short time. Halep enjoyed his return to center court as he took fourth seed and sent a warning notice to the rest of the field.

He smashed 17 winners, kept an eye on his errors and broke Badosa’s serve five times to close the win in an hour.

“It was where I wanted to be today. I think I played a good match,” Halep said. “It’s always tough to play against him, he’s a great player.

“Always nervous at first, but I really enjoyed being back on center court, in front of this beautiful crowd, always supporting me. It’s a pleasure to be back here.”

‘Really pleased with my performance’

Halep has been flying under the radar at the 2022 Championships, but is now considered a serious title contender as the only former champion left in the draw and none of the top 15 women.

He is yet to lose a set in the 2022 Championships.

“I’m really happy with the way I’ve played this tournament so far. Day by day, it’s getting better,” Halep said.

“I’m just looking forward to playing next and giving my best again like today.”
